It’s been a while since we’ve heard something uptempo from the man who creates more tunes per hour than anybody else, but then he has been busy knocking out some excellently twisted dubstep tracks under his own moniker as well as Crooked One. But, it’s been well worth the wait. Tune smith and man of the moment Kanji Kinetic (Trouble On Bass, Rag & Bone, Coin Operated) gets enlisted for remix duty and serves up an epic remix of ‘Future Past’ complete with old skool references and contemporary Bassline flavas. The Mutate To Survive EP will please many ears. Blackmass Plastics pedigree is second to none. Already responsible for two well received EPs on Rag & Bone, he has also been a regular contributor to the musical output of Combat Recordings, both as artist and remixer. This has seen him rework the likes of Scorn, King Cannibal, Cursor Minor, Scanone and Dexorcist. Releases have also surfaced on the French label SMB, Scanone’s Yellow Machines, Dead Silence’s label Audio Illusion, Digital Distortionz and Bow Wow. And somehow he still finds time to run the ‘true to the core’ labels Dirty Needles and Thorn Industries. - Kanji Kinetic - Shock Tactics EP - Totter18 http://i-o-inc.com/?catNo=Totter18&ref_id=rss Kanji Kinetic, destined for big things, makes his ‘vinyl’ debut with 3 absolute stormers. What is it? Who knows, but these tracks are certainly turning things on their head. Random elements of bassline, 4x4, grime, glitch and dubstep all dangerously mashed up for some irresistible dancefloor epic-ness. Already being championed globally by the likes of Drop The Lime, Tayo, Rico Tubbs and Starkey. It’s been such a big release that Mary Anne Hobbs recently opened her show with ‘Shut Up’, played it again the following week and has been regularly playing it in dj sets ever since. After a short period of drum & bass production, Kanji switched to high-energy 4x4 and dubstep beats united by monstrous basslines. His first outing, the 'Bakemono' EP’, released earlier this year on digital label Subgrade Records quickly found its way into a variety of record boxes and at the beginning of 2008 Kanji teamed up with friend and producer DeaD PersoN to form the diverse Electrostimulation Records. He has just had a remix released on Drop The Lime’s Trouble & Bass label and his second vinyl release is about to surface on London’s wonky techno label, Coin Operated. Kanji Kinetic also recently featured on the New Noise show on London's XFM radio station and has also received props from Tayo and Jay Cunning on Kiss FM, plus regular airplay on Sub FM and ILL FM. The EP has also attracted excited reactions from Si Begg, Radioactive Man, Fact, Blackmass Plastics, Hyponik, Subeena and El Kano. - King Cannibal - Call Me Mr Cold Blooded - Totter17 http://i-o-inc.com/?catNo=Totter17&ref_id=rss Call Me Mr Cold Blooded takes things to a shockingly new level. King Cannibal (a new moniker for seasoned producer Zilla), uses the essence of drum & bass by the likes of Limewax, SPL, Technical Itch and re-works the sound into a breakstep epic. Intense drums and a searing hook fall away to a filtered breakdown that leaves your heart racing. A Hundred Eyes Closed on the flip uses similar components but evolves a more ghostly, Vexd-like workout that is loosely dubstep but goes somewhere darker and more twisted. Continuing nicely from the previous Rag & Bone output by Aaron Spectre, and Drop The Lime, this has certified big tune status written all over it. Since the release of this 12” for Rag & Bone, King Cannibal has been signed to Ninja Tunes for an album and single deal. And recently he unleashed a stunning remix of Unique 3’s The Theme for FAT! Records, however King Cannibal’s history began long before that with a series of under the counter mixtapes that got the heads of both Warp Records and Ninja Tune talking. Alongside co-collaborator Bubby Pearce, this led to a guest appearance on Coldcut’s Solid Steel show, sets at Dedbeat and most notably the opportunity to mix together Warps’ back catalogue for their high profile Warp Vision DVD project. Earlier this year he also broadcast a mix on Mary Anne Hobbs Breezeblock show. This is the first of what will be many vinyl outpourings by King Cannibal over the next year, with 12’s lined up for Combat Recordings, Bong Ra’s Kriss Records and the American Shockout label which has already received Radio 1 airplay. You heard it here first. - Aaron Spectre - Say More Fire - Totter16 http://i-o-inc.com/?catNo=Totter16&ref_id=rss It seems that Rag & Bone is becoming the new home for producers of harder edged music who are successfully turning their hands to beats and bass around the 140bpm mark. Following in the footsteps of the likes of FZV and Drop The Lime, Aaron Spectre adds another quality string to his bow and lands us with two promising monster cuts. Say More Fire comes crashing in as the absolute floor filler. A filtered intro gives way to a smooth rolling beat with a dancehall swing, akin to drum & bass but only slower, a bit like Search and Destroy. Steadily building up to a swirl of eerie synths, delayed bleeps and a barrage of vocal stabs, the scene is set for a killer drop. Then the riot ensues. A singed bassline raises the roof and charred breaks intersperse and punctuate this slab of dancefloor frenzy. Music Is The Weapon works from the same sketch but is sleeker, more sophisticated. Reminiscent of early Slaughter Mob tracks, only tougher. It builds to a crescendo of glitchcore edits on the break before dropping back to the groove for the final rollout. Grown in Boston, hardened in the NYC pressure cooker, and engineered in Berlin, Aaron Spectre works in a number of different styles from ambient to glitchy melodic electronica, to breakcore to ragga jungle. His live sets reveal his hardcore and punk roots, in aesthetic if not in sound. Refusing to sit motionless behind a laptop, he tweaks and re-works tracks on the fly with various midi controllers, hammered dulcimer, plus a bundle of energy and diy enthusiasm. He’s had a string of releases on the likes of Death$ucker and Mashit and also on Ad Noiseam under his Drumcorps moniker. - Warlock - Window Smasher - Totter15 http://i-o-inc.com/?catNo=Totter15&ref_id=rss The first offering this year from Rag & Bone’s very own Warlock. Two of the three tracks explore his unique turbulent breakbeat style that has surfaced on many earlier releases for the label as well as his output on Dirty Needles. Window Smasher, the lead track takes on the essence of late nineties drum & bass in the vein of DJ Die or Krust but reworks it into a breakstep mover. Chopped and filtered breaks combine with a bassline of speaker shaking proportions while an array of sci-fi synths and ghostly FX complete this very full picture. Definitely one for the rewind crew. Pistols At Dawn harnesses several more rattling breaks and retro loops, but heads in an altogether different direction. Nervously switching and jittering from beat to break, ‘Pistols At Dawn’ is somehow held together by a hammering square wave bass, but you’re still rendered unsure of quite what’s gonna happen next. Stand Alone quite rightly takes the space of the B2 track and bears witness to the developing side of Warlock’s more halfstep output. A deep alternative dubstep number that sways with the half time rhythm and adds to the mix some gritty vintage analogue noise plus some cut-up arpeggiated rumblings that make for a track that blurs the boundaries even further. - Drop The Lime - Bad Girlz - Totter14 http://i-o-inc.com/?catNo=Totter14&ref_id=rss Drop The Lime has for the last few years shown his worth as a faultless producer of daring sub weighted sonics. From his Brooklyn base DTL he has proven his technique with drum & bass and breakcore. But recently he’s been turning his hand to the realms of breakstep, dubstep and grime with effortless ease and it’s this new output that surfaces on Rag & Bone for Drop The lime’s debut UK release. ‘Bad Girlz’ is the killer tune. Heaviness all the way. Echoing the talents of Search & Destroy and Dubchild but raising the game with its sinister and edgy impact. ‘Hold On’ compliments nicely. A real party roller but still maintaining a devilish delivery with its turbo bass and hypnotic groove. But it’s ‘Mandeer Hunted’ that is the deepest cut. Early Warp style bleep melds cleverly with stark minimal dubstep rhythms that’s not to be missed. - FZV - Assimilator - Totter13 http://i-o-inc.com/?catNo=Totter13&ref_id=rss Pushing the boundaries just a little more, up steps a new artist to Rag & Bone. FZV aka Richard Herbert turn his pedigree of electronic releases for labels such Ai Records and Hekate into a heavy slab of dancefloor sonics. FZV, originally inspired by the likes of Aphex Twin, Autechre and the sounds of Coil, and Einstürzende Neubauten, has been evolving his sound to make some epic tracks. ‘Assimilator’ the leading track, is brutal industrial breaks driven by punishing beats and turbo sub-bass. Leviathan operates along similar lines but is a moodier affair of filmic soundscapes and metallic break-step. Blackmass Plastics, busy expanding his remix portfolio these days, gets involved and provides his own tough version, giving it a more junglistic sheen full of filtered bass and an arrangement that locks in to place at every turn. Forward thinking indeed. - Warlock - Just A Face In The Street - Totter12 http://i-o-inc.com/?catNo=Totter12&ref_id=rss Warlock, one of the main forces behind this label returns with another firing release with a sound that just refuses to be catagorised. Rag & Bone is certainly establishing itself as the maverick label. Here, Warlock takes his dj skills into the studio and emerges with 'Just A Face In The Street'. Hailing from deep in the underground, this lively number is fuelled by a heavy metallic break, infused with a broken and pounding samba swing. A gnarly hook and a dangerously heavy b-line means this one will mash up the dancefloor. 'Ghost Dog' continues the vibe but re-arranges things to create a spooky, stepping roller that reverberates like a deep techno groove. 'Cellar Door' rounds off the ep. A mutant dubstep variant, crafted with eerie electronic soundscapes, lush overloaded delays and shuddering bass. As always with any Rag & Bone release its getting full support from djs right across the board. - Blackmass Plastics - Four Aces EP - Totter11 http://i-o-inc.com/?catNo=Totter11&ref_id=rss Blackmass Plastics returns for his second release on Rag & Bone. A fantastic follow-up exploring break-step and dub-step territories with a twisted edge. He first came to prominence working with the Dead Silence Collective in the mid 90’s. Producing a good stack of celebrated electro and d&b tracks for their Audio Illusion imprint alongside cohorts Dexorcist and Bass Junkie. Blackmass is also the founder of 2 labels. Thorn Industries – a cult underground label dedicated to alternative industrial electronics. And Dirty Needles currently receiving good props from those on both the dub-step and electro scenes. - Warlock - Full Tilt - Totter10 http://i-o-inc.com/?catNo=Totter10&ref_id=rss Sorry, no more info on this item... Like it, a lot. Will be playing out Ginsperation for sure. // Posthuman. Well, we could not have put it better ourselves.
